WORS Round 2 was a SCORCHER in Kelowna! The Western Off-road Racing Series has continued it’s impressive inaugural season with a scenic jaunt over the mighty Coquihalla Pass to go toe-to-toe with interior British Columbia’s best electric off-road R/C racers at Kelowna R/C on May 26-28, 2017. Mountain air merged into lake country, giving way seamlessly to sunbaked pasture and dirt racing heaven and with some of the best in the west in attendance the 2017 Spring Scorcher Shootout was always going to live up to it’s name! With some neighbourly requests in place at the KRC track, the nitro portion of the WORS tour would sit out Round 2, leaving 105 entries in 9 electric classes of 1/8 and[…]

“When you wanna be the best, you go and shoot the best!” It’s no secret that throughout it’s six previous editions the JConcepts Indoor National Series has grown to become one of, if not THE premier indoor 1/10 travelling race tour in North America. It travels to great race tracks. It attracts top local talent and brings pro talent with it. It brings hype. And atmosphere. Most importantly it creates a culture of great racing. And on May 19-21 2017, for the second race of it’s 7th season the JConcepts INS brought it all, including a fleet of pro talent, to PNW racing mecca Tacoma R/C Raceway that would rival any top level event on the planet. Ryan Cavalieri, Spencer[…]

“The Big Barn Shoot Out has set a whole new bar for R/C racing in Canada. This was quite simply the best event we have ever had in BC. The future potential of this event is unlimited.” The rolling green corn fields of Chilliwack British Columbia, located about an hour east of Vancouver, played host to the first ever Big Barn Shootout on April 21-22 and 23. More specifically the 30,000 square foot horse arena within Chilliwack Heritage Park, aka The Big Red Barn, would be the location for the ground breaking event with a huge temporary track built by a small group of dedicated volunteers in under two days. With the world famous tulip festival happening just down the[…]

Cabin Fever 2017 lewiston idaho

The Cabin Fever R/C Supercross race in Lewiston Idaho has become a fixture of the racing scene in the greater north west region and this year, I got to go and experience it! Known as the first dirt race of the year in this area it has become something of a legendary event. Intrigued by the stories, I joined my local club racing buddy and Maclan teammate Rob in his RV for the eight and a half hour trek from Vancouver (after 3 hrs in snow from Whistler the day before!) and we made it to the Lewiston Roundup mid afternoon on the Friday which had been assigned for practice. The event would go on to draw 296 entries, supposedly[…]

conquer the carpet

The first weekend of February 2017 saw Outlaw RC host their biggest race on record, the three day Conquer The Carpet event. Over 215 entries took part in three rounds of qualifying on Saturday, with a full program of lower mains and triple A mains on the Sunday. As always, The Toy Car Creative joined in the fun, competing in the 2wd and 4wd modified buggy classes and taking time in between rounds to snap tons of frames with my trusty Nikon. With racers travelling from far and wide, including pro-drivers Kurt Wenger (Schelle Racing Innovations) and Nick Wautlet (Team Associated) all the way from California, the racing was always going to be some of the best ever seen in[…]

diehard rc north west model hobby expo

The weekend of January 27-29 saw the return of the North West Model Hobby Expo to the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe, Washington. Along with displays and demonstrations from numerous model builders and groups, Diehard RC also hosted their 2017 carpet off-road trophy race as part of the three day festival. The Toy CarCreative always loves to support the local trophy races and so I packed up the truck with all my gear and headed south for a weekend of awesome racing with good friends. The action was fast and furious and the competition fierce. Along with competing in both 2wd and 4wd modified buggy classes I also took some time between races to snap a few frames. While my[…]

The Kyosho Lazer ZX6.6 (part# 30047B) is a 1/10 scale 4wd electric powered off-road racing buggy. The .6 designation identifies a running update to the already successful ZX6 platform, which filled three spots in the 2015 IFMAR Worlds A-main and has been developed for competition at the highest level with the input of World Champion drivers like Jared Tebo and Naoto Matsukura. This update is said to improve high-grip performance and those ’Turf Worlds’ cars were no-doubt early test mules for what has been delivered in this package. No denying then this model has great pedigree and should be no slouch on the track. Whether or not it can be tamed by this weekend warrior remains to be seen! This is[…]

cody grams 1/8 e-truggy

The final Northwest Championship Tour (NCT) showdown of 2016 was the Columbia Cup at Tri-Cities R/C in Pasco Washington on September 16-18 and despite persistent weather delays and a lost round of qualifying, it did NOT disappoint! Racing has this knack of creating great storylines and coming into the final round the 1/8 nitro buggy fight between Mike “The Hammer” Dana (AE) and Tayler “Wonder Boy” Wonders (Kyosho) was the talk of the town. They were practically inseparable through 5 rounds, both drivers having their share of luck good and bad throughout the summer. Neither racer had a perfect weekend in Pasco either. Dana did snag the TQ and they were both in solid A spots but the outcome was[…]

skagit raceway

The Northwest Championship Tour (NCT) made it’s fourth stop of the the summer at Burlington Washington’s Skagit River R/C Raceway on July 22-24. The weather was wetter than expected come Friday morning and many racers arrived to find practice delayed by quite a few hours. Hard work by all involved saw the track quickly returned to a raceable condition, improving throughout the weekend and by Sunday the racing was as hot as the reading on the thermometer. The best outdoor racers in the Pacific Northwest gather for the NCT and Burlington’s Westside Challenge is traditionally one of the most popular stops. Over 240 entries confirmed that for yet another year, racers and their families happy to call the expansive green[…]

parma baja '55 short course body

50’s Gasser Meets Vintage Stock Car in This Sweet Candy Combo! When deciding how to paint a hot rod it can be easy to gravitate towards the traditional flames. Regardless of the scale or how authentic the piece is, a hot rod is a hot rod and by it’s very definition is built to go fast! While flames and speed go together like Vegemite and toast (not always in a good way though…),the fact is I struggle to cut flames cleanly and when it comes to painting a clients body, those clean cuts are a must. When my buddy Josh dropped off the Parma Baja ’55 Short Course body and his creative direction maxed out at “make it look cool”[…]
